A new development in unmanned ground systems has been validated in Ukraine, where a remote weapon station (RWS) was successfully integrated and tested on the THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle. The platform, known for its modular design and operational flexibility, was fitted with the BURIA RWS featuring a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
This integration, carried out by Estonian-based Milrem Robotics in collaboration with Ukrainian defense firm Frontline, was confirmed through live-fire exercises conducted under operationally relevant conditions. According to the press release, the test demonstrated the system’s ability to engage targets accurately at distances of up to 1,100 meters, while keeping personnel at a safe distance from the line of fire.
The THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) is a multi-role robotic platform designed for both defensive and offensive support roles. Its modular architecture allows for various payload configurations, making it suitable for different mission profiles—from logistics and medevac to fire support. The BURIA RWS expands its capability by adding kinetic engagement to the platform’s toolkit.
During the trial, the THeMIS showed stable performance and consistent target tracking, key indicators of the system’s suitability for use in combat environments. The successful demonstration supports the concept of using robotic ground systems to reduce the risk to soldiers while maintaining operational effectiveness.
The BURIA system has been in military service since January 2025 and is now in serial production. It is currently being integrated into front-line combat support units, accompanied by a dedicated training program.s
Additional validation of the system’s performance is planned over the coming weeks, with live-fire tests set to evaluate the BURIA-THeMIS combination across different battlefield scenarios. Insights from these tests will inform ongoing system upgrades and deployment strategies.
THeMIS was the first unmanned ground vehicle of its type deployed by Ukrainian forces in the ongoing conflict with Russia. It remains one of the most advanced and widely used UGVs in the region.
