According to a recent survey made by the Brookings Institution, about 70 percent of Americans say that the Islamic State is the biggest threat to the United States in the Middle East

The poll released Jan. 8 found that the threat from the terrorist group was viewed as a much bigger risk than Iran (13 percent) and the Palestinian and Israeli violence (13 percent).

According to Fierce HomeLand Security, concerns among Republicans, Democrats and Independents were roughly equal.

The poll of 1,008 American adults was conducted Nov. 14-19, 2014 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.

The U.S.-led coalition including European and Arab nations began bombing the militant group – which is also known by the acronyms ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and ISIL, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – in Iraq in August and then in Syria in late September.

When asked if they supported use of ground troops if the U.S.-led airstrikes failed, the Brookings poll found that 57 percent of Americans opposed that strategy, while 41 percent supported it.

This time, responses among people from different parties differed. Fifty-three percent of Republicans supported such a move, while only 36 percent of Democrats and 31 percent of Independents were in favor.
