A new unit was recently established by the Judea and Samaria district of the Israeli Fire Fighting and Rescue Authority – the Special Rescue Unit, Yalam. This elite force specializes in complex rescue operations in harsh terrain, anything involving deep pits, urban structures, steep slopes and currents.

Over the weekend district command held a course graduation ceremony attended by the eight new cadets who joined the unit. According to authority representatives the Yalam will spearhead special rescue operations in the Judea and Samaria district, mainly incidents involving urban areas, cliffs, steep slopes or caves. Cadets have also been trained for rescue operations involving dangerous water currents, with the instructors themselves trained in France. Other rescue units specializing in heights and water are already operational in other districts.

Yalam officers will be equipped with special vehicles and gear. Cadets underwent intense training in harsh environments and were drilled in different types of complex rescue missions, including using ziplines and retreiving casualties from very steep slopes.
