Europe is enhancing its capabilities in the external border and coast guard fields. The European Commission will receive support in the development of innovative technology from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

Frontex will deliver best practices in border security to develop biometrics and other advanced security technology for the border and coast guard community.

The European coast guard functions comprise tasks related to safety and security at sea, such as search and rescue, border control, fisheries control, customs activities, law enforcement and environmental protection.

EU-funded security research enables innovation in technologies and knowledge that is crucial for developing capabilities to address today’s security challenges and to anticipate tomorrow’s threats and opportunities.

Frontex operates to reduce vulnerability of the external borders based on comprehensive situational awareness; guarantee safe, secure and well-functioning EU borders, and plan and maintain European Border and Coast Guard capabilities. Its support at the external borders helps guarantee free movement without internal borders checks.

Over the last 15 years, Frontex has developed expertise in the area of integrated border management research and innovation, which will allow the agency to assist the Commission.

According to frontex.europe.eu, the organization will contribute to the effective implementation of relevant parts of the Framework Programs for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) according to issues such as the identification of research activities addressing capability gaps in the areas of surveillance, situational awareness, biometrics, cybersecurity and information availability and exchange. The agency will translate these gaps into requirements for solutions to be researched.
