The US Army’s new rifle for ground infantry squads has been designed to close the gap between the rifleman and the highly trained sniper. The Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR) is a 62.7 mm weapon.

Developed by Heckler & Koch Defense, the 7.62mm SDMR rifle is fitted with a Sig Sauer Tango6 optic, as well as a special buttstock and suppressor.

The tactical gap in fire ranges is between the rifleman that can shoot out to 300m effectively and a sniper that can effectively shoot targets from 600m and more, so that it will not be necessay to rely on a sniper for those shots.

At present, the quantity deployed is restricted and will be provided especially to the National Guard units, according to arny-technology.com.
