Following reports that Chinese research institutions with ties to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have repurposed Meta’s Llama models for potential military applications the, Meta has announced it will make its Llama AI models available to US government agencies and contractors working on national security projects.

Meta’s Llama models are open-source, meaning they can be accessed and modified by anyone, including foreign entities like those in China. While Meta has imposed terms prohibiting military and warfare use of its models, enforcement of these rules has proven difficult. This loophole allowed Chinese researchers to adapt the models for defense-related purposes, prompting concerns over the models’ unintended military applications.

In response to these developments, Meta has clarified in a statement to Reuters that any use of Llama by the PLA is unauthorized. Now, Meta has taken proactive steps to ensure the models are made available to the US government for defense and national security efforts. The tech giant confirmed in a blog post that Llama will be accessible to US government agencies, as well as private sector partners supporting national security operations.

To facilitate the deployment, Meta has partnered with major companies including Accenture, Amazon Web Services, Lockheed Martin, IBM, Palantir, Microsoft and more. These companies will integrate Llama into various defense and security-related projects. For example, Oracle is using the model to process aircraft maintenance documents, while Scale AI is applying it to support national security missions. Lockheed Martin has integrated Llama into its AI Factory, helping accelerate code generation, data analysis, and other processes.

Although Meta has previously restricted Llama’s use for military purposes, the company made an exception for US defense-related applications, according to Bloomberg, citing the importance of supporting national security and establishing global standards for open-source AI. The specifics of Meta’s collaboration with the US government remain unclear.
