Often devastating and unpredictable, there is not much that can be done to avoid a natural disaster. In the scenario of natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes, the most we can do is prepare in advance and find better ways to respond in order to minimize the total damage caused.

The Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) is looking for an AI software solutions that can assist with responding after a natural disaster. The center is interested in a solution that utilizes AI and machine learning in order to easily identify people and infrastructure that have been affected by floods and other disasters. The software should also be able to formulate an efficient and effective disaster response strategy.

The AI solution is intended to provide real time situational awareness to disaster response officials so that they have more time to analyze the situation and make calculated decisions. The solution will save lives while cutting costs by speeding up search and rescue efforts.

Furthermore, Defensesystems.com mentions that JAIC are expecting the solution to be able to create models of damaged infrastructure.

The Department of Defense will evaluate solutions based on their relevance to the project and on their responsiveness capabilities in a real world situation.

This effort is all part of a program designed to innovate commercial companies and have them engage with government contracts.
