Autonomous Vehicle Safety Depends on Advanced Radar System

Automotive radar devices are now appearing in passenger vehicles all over the world. These devices are used in advanced cruise control systems, which can direct a vehicle’s accelerator and braking systems, controlling the distance between it and another vehicle. Now they are needed for the autonomous vehicle market.

The Swedish automotive safety systems manufacturer Autoliv is to provide a global automaker with its 77GHz high-resolution radar systems for autonomous driving. As a leading automotive manufacturer in the race to bring more automated and ultimately autonomous vehicles to the market, Autoliv is recognized for its commitment and unique strength in ADAS development.

According to Autoliv’s announcement on, its radar systems see oncoming vehicles and autonomously manage lane changes during highway driving. The front and rear radars provide different functions for the vehicle; the front corner radars support object and free space detections, while the rear corner radars contribute to object detection, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert.

According to the company’s website, the radar sensors note vital information, such as range, angle and doppler velocity. This information is used to determine the driving situation and warn the driver in potentially dangerous events. If the driver does not take appropriate action in time and a crash is about to happen, advanced radar systems can take control of the vehicle to avoid the crash or lessen the accident’s severity. This high level of safety functionality is maintained in bad weather and no light, when driving conditions are at their worst.

The radar transmitter emits signals that bounce back from objects ahead, at the side and to the rear of the vehicle, which are captured by the multiple receivers integrated throughout the vehicle. The radar system detects and tracks objects around the car, warning the driver of a potential collision or initiating electronic stability control intervention.
