A recent report by VikingCloud has revealed alarming statistics about the growing threat of cyberattacks to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). According to the findings, losses as low as $10,000 would lead 32% of businesses to shut down, emphasizing the devastating impact even a small-scale attack can have on these enterprises.

Cybersecurity has now become one of the largest concerns for SMBs, according to the report. This shift reflects an increased awareness of the vulnerabilities that businesses face in today’s digital landscape. VikingCloud’s 2025 SMB Threat Landscape report, which gathered data from a quantitative survey of SMB owners across North America, highlights how many businesses are underprepared for the increasingly sophisticated cyber threats they face.

The report reveals a significant gap between the perceived risk and the steps businesses are taking to mitigate it. While 60% of SMB owners believe they are likely to be targeted by cybercriminals, a staggering 74% of them either manage cybersecurity themselves or put the responsibility on a family member or friend. Furthermore, many businesses continue to neglect basic security practices, such as using weak passwords, failing to update software regularly, and lacking multi-factor authentication.

Financial limitations also play a key role in these shortcomings. Around 32% of SMB owners cited the inability to afford dedicated cybersecurity personnel as a major barrier to improving their defenses.

Interestingly, many SMBs are also looking to AI as a solution. 65% of surveyed business owners believe AI could help them manage cybersecurity more effectively by identifying potential threats before they impact business operations. AI’s ability to flag phishing attempts, provide real-time threat responses, and monitor cybersecurity risks is seen as a potential game-changer, especially for SMBs with limited resources.

VikingCloud’s findings suggest that cybersecurity is no longer just a technical concern but a key business strategy. As cyberattacks continue to evolve, SMBs must take proactive steps to protect themselves—because the cost of inaction may be too great to recover from.
