The US Air Force is exploring the potential of integrating the Angry Kitten electronic warfare (EW) pod onto larger aircraft platforms, including the A-10 Thunderbolt II and C-130 Hercules. This advanced EW system has already demonstrated its capabilities on the F-16 fighter jet and is currently undergoing testing on the MQ-9 Reaper drone. Recent test results on the C-130 combat search and rescue (CSAR) aircraft have had promising outcomes, highlighting the potential of this system for larger aircraft with traditionally limited EW capabilities.
According to a LinkedIn Article by ANG AFRC Test Center (AATC), the pod on the C-130 stands out for its unique EW system, which can autonomously adjust its jamming techniques in real-time. Unlike conventional systems that rely on pre-programmed data files or require manual input, Angry Kitten utilizes machine learning to analyze detected enemy radars and tailor its response to neutralize threats, according to The Defense Post. This adaptive approach ensures that the system can handle a wide variety of electronic warfare challenges, including those posed by unfamiliar or emerging threats.
Initial tests with the C-130, which often operates in hostile environments without dedicated EW protection, have shown particularly encouraging results. Engineers aboard the C-130 were able to adjust the pod’s jamming techniques mid-flight based on real-time input. The modifications were seamlessly pushed to the pod during flight, allowing the system to continuously adapt to its surroundings.
The system is modular, with a design that allows for easy reconfiguration depending on mission requirements. This flexibility is made possible by the Special Airborne Mission Installation and Response (SABIR) system, which can be attached to aircraft, such as the C-130, through a paratrooper’s door.
Looking ahead, the Angry Kitten system is set to undergo further improvements, with a next-generation version—tentatively called “Angry Kitten Inc 2 Block 2”—currently in development, according to The Defense Post. This upgraded system will feature enhanced hardware, digital receivers instead of analog ones, and a more compact design.
