At the LG World Premiere event in Las Vegas on January 6th, 2025, the company’s CEO William Cho introduced a groundbreaking vision for the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in consumer experiences: “Affectionate Intelligence.” This innovative concept promises to elevate AI from its current role to that of a personalized, proactive assistant capable of enhancing daily life in a way that feels genuinely intuitive and empathetic.

“Affectionate Intelligence” represents a shift in how AI can relate to users, using advanced AI to understand emotions, needs, and preferences. It aims to act as a friendly, all-encompassing home assistant that can guide and support users both proactively and reactively. The core of the experience lies in AI’s ability to respond to a person’s needs based on context, emotions, and real-time circumstances.

A demonstration at the event highlighted just how personalized this new AI can be. For instance, LG’s AI agent, Furon, observed a user coughing at night and adjusted the room’s temperature accordingly to ensure comfort. In another scenario, the agent noticed the user’s afternoon was free and suggested accompanying their mother to a health check-up. It also showed how the agent might suggest a coffee break if it detected the user had forgotten their coffee cup during their commute.

The AI is also attuned to biometric signals, and can play soothing music when stress is detected. On the road, Furon might even reroute a driver to avoid traffic or recommend joining a meeting virtually to save time.

As part of LG’s larger vision, the “Affectionate Intelligence” concept will operate seamlessly across connected devices, with capabilities underpinned by sophisticated AI and integrated services. By learning and adapting to the user’s environment, history, and preferences, LG’s AI aims to improve every aspect of a user’s life — from home management to personal health and productivity.

While the concept is still evolving, it represents a significant leap toward a future where AI doesn’t just assist but empathizes and acts as a true companion in daily living. The introduction of “Affectionate Intelligence” could possibly pave the way for a new wave of sci-fi-like, AI-driven experiences for the home, though its availability may come with a premium price tag for those looking to embrace the future of AI interaction.
