South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has announced a significant advancement in military technology with a 5.5 million dollar contract for the mass procurement of advanced infrared-shielding smoke canisters. The deal, signed with Samyang Chemical, will see the production of these canisters take place between 2024 and 2026.
Ever since the completion of their development in 2020, the smoke canisters underwent extensive inspections and field operations testing. Now, South Korean forces will be equipped with this innovative technology by next year. Unlike existing canisters, which have been in use since the 1980s and primarily blocked visible light, the new models are designed to scatter infrared radiation. This capability significantly hampers the effectiveness of enemy thermal imaging systems and laser-guided weapons, thus improving the survivability of soldiers and military assets.
DAPA has indicated that the new smoke canisters will be applicable in both ground and maritime operations, broadening their tactical utility. The transition from older models, like the KM5 and KM4A2 canisters, marks a critical evolution in military smoke technology, as these earlier versions could not defend against infrared surveillance, according to the press release.
In addition to their enhanced performance, the new canisters are also low in toxicity and non-carcinogenic, addressing health concerns for both military personnel and civilians. DAPA has confirmed that their performance is comparable to smoke canisters used by the U.S. and German forces, highlighting their advanced capabilities. The new canisters are lighter in weight, facilitating quick maneuvering and reducing the combat load for soldiers, thus enhancing operational convenience.
Initial production inspections and field operation tests will precede the delivery of these canisters to the military, with plans for international sales in the pipeline. As South Korea continues to innovate its military capabilities, the introduction of these infrared-shielding smoke canisters represents a significant leap forward in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of its armed forces on the battlefield.
