Computation power and AI-based processing are becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, yet the process of training and even operating machine-learning models is extremely energy-consuming. By 2030, 6000 terawatt-hours of energy will be spent on data centers and networks — 21% of global electricity demand, a 3-fold increase from 2021. Another growing trend is the use of edge computing – a distributed computing framework that minimizes latency and brings enterprise applications closer to data sources such as IoT devices, biomedical sensors, smart cameras, autonomous vehicles, and more.

The next stage the industry is looking for is comprehensive processing at the edge, and this is where SpinEdge comes in. SpinEdge is an Israeli startup company that is developing a solution to this challenging demand and is revolutionizing AI inference and Edge computing performance using spintronic technology – nanoelectronics based on the electrons’ spin (an intrinsic quantum property), developing an analog Spintronic-based AI accelerator for inference acceleration. SpinEdge accelerator achieves x10 improvement in TOPS (Tera operations per second), and at least x50 times in TOPS/W energy efficiency against today’s most advanced GPUs and AI accelerators.

The technology is especially beneficial for edge devices, having restrictions on power consumption, but still requiring strong data processing capabilities (like smart cameras, drones, autonomous cars, biochips, etc).

Many edge devices today, like drones or handheld devices, cannot perform comprehensive analysis on-site and require the data captured to be sent to a “stronger” server for AI analysis. This not only causes latency in getting the results but also raises the problem of bandwidth when trying to send the data of multiple sensors.

The SpinEdge spintech analog AI accelerator will be sold as a chiplet and is meant to be integrated with any existing processor, GPU, or AI chip, offering the ability to upgrade and perform complex AI calculations and analysis at a fraction of the cost and the power, and at a much higher speed.

Another major advantage of SpinEdge’s tech is that it is non-volatile – the memory is not lost when the device is turned off, and there’s no delay when turned on again.

SpinEdge is spearheading the spintronic activity and the new spintronic revolution in Israel. The company’s team unites experts in spintronics, AI, advanced nanomanufacturing and high-tech business. The company’s success will bring a revolution to the world of AI and enable a new level of intelligence that is unattainable today to be built into smart Edge devices around us.

SpinEdge is a graduate of the INNOFENSE Innovation Center operated by iHLS in collaboration with IMoD. A unique acceleration program that removes entrance barriers to the technological ecosystem turning startups into mature, leading companies while connecting them with relevant investors, which is designed to strengthen the links between the civilian and defense markets via the collaborative development of the technologies, thus advancing and improving their integration in both markets.
