A main and critical need for the IDF ground units is a rapid-deployment blocking element for openings of various types and sizes.

The problems begin with the given parameters- beyond the fact that there is a hole in the ground, all other parameters are constantly changing and require a very versatile and sophisticated solution. The solution needs to block both passage and fire, but also needs to be mobile and transportable by a minimal number of people. The existing solution did not suffice, was cumbersome and very heavy, and had a limited shelf life.

This is where ConVex, a company providing industrial and engineering design services for a variety of applications and industries, comes in. The company came to the Special Operations Engineering Unit to understand the needs in the field and began to explore possible solutions.

At first, they created the “quick grate”, which is suitable for rapid deployment and can block passage, but is only a temporary solution and does not block fire. Convex then turned to face the problem from a slightly different direction and created a new product – a device that would seal the hole regardless of size or material, and block both passage and fire. This was done through spatial analysis and formal geometric research, which led to the use of materials with appropriate properties – elasticity, the ability to hold onto the walls of the shaft, and physical sealing.

Beyond the physical capabilities, the product deters, surprises, and blocks light. The mechanism can slow down and block blast waves without dislodging from its place, as well as block sight. The material it is made of creates friction with the walls and secures it in place. Possible development stages are the production of models in different sizes – one for openings of up to 50cm and one for openings of up to 1 meter, as well as the development of a case for carrying and deployment.

Convex has been operating since 2006, owned and managed by Nimrod Nahmias, and provides development and planning services for both civilian and security companies. They deal in a wide range of fields, from toys to consumer goods, medical products, and national security.

Whether it’s a long-term, regulated project or an immediate operational need, Convex specializes in providing quick solutions, concepts, planning, manufacturing, and integration of the various systems.

Convex is a graduate of the INNOFENSE Innovation Center operated by iHLS in collaboration with IMoD. A unique acceleration program that removes entrance barriers to the technological ecosystem turning startups into mature, leading companies while connecting them with relevant investors, which is designed to strengthen the links between the civilian and defense markets via the collaborative development of the technologies, thus advancing and improving their integration in both markets.
