The U.S. Coast Guard is gathering information from suppliers of “Non-Lethal Impact Munitions,” which the Coast Guard might furnish to its maritime boarding teams in an effort to reduce the likelihood that they will need to resort to lethal force.

The Coast Guard wants to hear from manufacturers and suppliers who can offer both “operational technologies” (which are currently being used) and “prototype technologies” (which could be available in the commercial or government markets in the next 30 to 36 months).

The Coast Guard would like to expand the application of Non-Lethal Technologies to compel compliance,” the agency explains in a document it published recently.

According to Government Security News the Coast Guard is soliciting capabilities documents, which will need to answer a long list of detailed questions about the technologies they are offering. Those statements, which cannot exceed 25 pages, are due to the Coast Guard by January 31, 2014.

The Coast Guard emphasizes that it is looking for technologies that are ready to be used, not requiring long development periods. The agency said it is “not seeking any low Technical Readiness Level (TRL) concepts.”
