AEL Sistemas, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, unveiled Brazil’s first microsatellite for military applications in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
According to AEL, the MMM-1 will be used for communication and remote sensing land monitoring along with other operational functions. “The Ministry of Defense will be the first customer of the satellite.” said Mark Arend, AEL’s chief technology officer.
Brazil does not currently produce satellites, but depends on other countries to meet national demand. As part of the country’s drive to develop its own space capabilities the MMM-1 development team received an initial investment of million reais ($19.4 million) with part of the funding coming from the Brazilian Innovation Agency (Financiadora de Estudios e Projectos or FINEP).
