The Race for Space-Based Solar Power Stations

China is taking a step forward with an ambitious initiative to build large-scale solar power stations in space. Spearheaded by Long Lehao, a senior rocket scientist and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), this project is being regarded as incredibly important as a transformative step, according to a report by South China Morning Post.

According to Interesting Engineering, the proposed solar array, as described by Long, would stretch 1 kilometer in width and be positioned in geostationary orbit, ensuring it remains stationary relative to Earth. This positioning would maximize exposure to sunlight and simplify the process of beaming energy back to the Earth.

The concept behind space-based solar power is simple but revolutionary. Unlike terrestrial solar power systems, which are affected by weather patterns, time of day, and seasonal changes, space-based solar arrays would operate continuously. The intensity of sunlight in space is far greater than what reaches Earth’s surface, making it an ideal environment for energy generation.

A key enabler of this project is China’s development of the Long March-9 (CZ-9), a heavy-lift, reusable rocket that will play a central role in transporting the massive solar array into space. With a capacity of over 150 tons, it would position China as a global leader in heavy-lift capabilities.

This is not just a conceptual project. China has already made strides in this field, launching its first experimental space solar power station in 2021 and conducting successful tests of its “Chasing Sun Project,” which demonstrated breakthrough performance in power transmission and beam collection efficiency.

Although this ambitious plan may take a long while to fully materialize, it marks a major step in the global race to harness solar power from space. Alongside China, other countries, including the United States, Japan, and the UK, are also exploring the potential of space-based solar energy. With the right technology and development, this innovation could revolutionize the global energy landscape.
