Researchers at the University of Waterloo developed a new artificial intelligence model that is able to reduce bias and enhance both trust and accuracy in machine learning-generated decision-making and knowledge organization.
Traditional machine learning models often do not provide impartial results and information and end up having biases, favoring groups with large populations, or being influenced by unknown factors.
These flawed and misinformed results can cause severe implications in many fields. According to Techxplore, the medical field is one area where there are severe implications for biased machine learning results. The reason for this is that hospital staff and medical professionals constantly rely on datasets that contain thousands of medical records and complex computer algorithms in order to make critical decisions about how to care for their patients.
This huge amount of data is being sorted with the assistance of machine learning to increase efficiency, but specific patient groups with rare symptomatic patterns may go undetected, and mislabelled patients and anomalies could impact diagnostic outcomes, which leads to misdiagnoses.
This new study is called “Theory and rationale of interpretable all-in-one pattern discovery and disentanglement system,” and it was led by Dr. Andrew Wong, a distinguished professor emeritus of systems design engineering at Waterloo. It provides an innovative model meant to eliminate such barriers by untangling complex patterns from data to relate them to specific underlying causes unaffected by anomalies and mislabeled instances. It can enhance trust and reliability in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI.)
Wong claims that this research represents a significant contribution to the field of XAI. He explains that the team had a revelation that led them to develop the new XAI model called Pattern Discovery and Disentanglement (PDD).
The team aims to use PDD to bridge the gap between AI technology and human understanding to help enable trustworthy decision-making and unlock deeper knowledge from complex data sources.
According to Techxplore, the new PDD model has revolutionized pattern discovery, and can discover new and rare patterns in datasets, which allows researchers and practitioners alike to detect mislabels or anomalies in machine learning.
