Kenya’s Defense Budget on the Rise

A new report says Kenya’s annual defense budget will grow from the US$4.3 billion recorded in the last few years to US$5.5 billion by 2018 as the country acquires helicopters, armoured vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and border surveillance and monitoring equipment.

Kenya is in the midst of a force modernization program aimed at equipping the armed forces to fight internal and external terrorism, arms smuggling, human trafficking and drug trafficking.

The country has apportioned an average of 2.4% of its GDP for defense purposes over the review period, a cumulative figure of US$4.3 billion. During the forecast period, the defense budget is expected to be US$5.5 billion cumulatively.
