Are Two Propellers Better Than Four?

When it comes to drones, are two propellers better than four? This Chinese company believes that when done right, fewer propellers means more battery life. This is what Zero Zero Robotics was aiming for when developing their V-Coptr Falcon bicopter drone. Capable of flying for over twice as long as its competition, the two-propeller drone burns less energy to fly, produces less noise, and is more portable than traditional quadcopter drones.

Due to their increased power and stability, quadcopter drones have always been standard in the world of consumer drones. However Zero Zero now claims that their tilt-rotor inspired drone design, allows the Falcon to match and even surpass regular quadcopter drones. Each propeller on the Falcon spins independently of each other, allowing the drone to maneuver similarly to a common drone.

Additionally, since the drone only needs to power two propellers, its battery usage is much lower than other quadcopters. The drone’s arms leading to its propellers are foldable too, so the drone is incredibly portable and easy to store.

The Falcon drone has been designed mainly for aerial photography and video. The drone utilizes a 12 megapixel camera mounted on a three-axis gimbal. Theverge.com mentions that the bicopter drone is capable of recording video at 4K at thirty frames per second.

The drone also utilizes an additional pair of cameras on its body. These cameras enable the drone to fly safely, avoid obstacles, and visually track objects. The drone is capable of being pre-programmed to fly a certain flight path for easy filming and cinematic shots.

The 730 gram bicopter drone is capable of operating up to seven kilometers away from its operator. The drone is also capable of automatically avoiding obstacles when flying at speeds up to 7 meters a second.
