In a bold move to redefine the future of extended reality (XR), Google has introduced Android XR, a new version of its popular Android operating system designed specifically for XR devices, which include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), aiming to make Android XR the go-to platform for these emerging technologies.

The new operating system is intended to work seamlessly with Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, allowing users to interact with both the virtual environments they see as well as the physical world they are in, enabling advanced control over a wide range of devices through voice commands and gestures. The OS is expected to feature a range of Google’s core apps, including YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Play, offering users familiar functionalities in immersive environments. A standout feature, Circle to Search, will allow users to quickly find information about objects they see through their XR devices simply by making a gesture.

The first device to feature Android XR is Samsung’s highly anticipated Project Moohan mixed reality headset. Set for release in 2025, Project Moohan will run on Qualcomm’s chips and promises to deliver a lightweight experience with cutting-edge displays, although detailed specs have yet to be revealed. Samsung’s involvement marks a significant partnership for Google, which is positioning Android XR as a major player in the XR space.

In addition to Samsung, several other companies are already working on XR hardware for the platform. Industry leaders such as Sony, Xreal, and Lynx are developing devices that will run on Android XR, expanding the ecosystem further.

Google is also entering the smartglasses market again, following the demise of the Google Glass project. The company has announced plans to begin real-world testing of prototype smartglasses running Android XR with a small group of users in the near future. With Android XR, Google is positioning itself at the forefront of XR innovation, promising exciting new possibilities for both consumers and businesses.
