Who says the Middle East is all about bloody wars? A new report by Deloitte shows a slightly more positive picture. According to its findings, the Middle East will be one of the world’s fastest adopters of Internet of Things solutions.

The internet of things represents a concept in which every normal and everyday device will be connected to the internet – usually via wireless connection – and communicate with each other in a smart fashion. This latest reports claims that the Middle East is expected to generate a revenue of USD 1.95 billion this year. The Middle East and Africa is set to post the world’s highest growth of cloud data traffic, increasing more than 8-fold from 30 exabytes in 2013 to 260 exabytes in 2018.

“With the Internet of Things quickly picking up momentum in the Middle East, combined with an increasing number of connected devices, broadband services, and Smart City initiatives, Big Data generation is growing exponentially,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Exhibitions & Events Management, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

Of course not all countries in the areas are experts in this fields and the leaders are clearly Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These very days, in fact, Saudi Arabia is building a giant smart city which is expected to soon become the largest smart city on the planet, populating no less than two million residents. The idea to invest huge sums of money in this field came from a proper reading to the map by Saudi entrepreneurs, who realized years ago that this is the “next big thing”.

Saudi Arabia is surely aspiring to brand itself as a wealth and technologically advanced country and become talk of the day around the world. And who knows? Maybe the big money in the hands of the Arabians countries’ wealthiest could actually improve life for residents of the area, who really are waiting for improvement.
