The best defense against aerial threats is interceptors of different types combined with attacking the sources of fire. This is the assessment of Dr Gabi Siboni head of the military and strategy program at the institute for national security studies.
Siboni will make the opening remarks in the Aerial threats conference to be held tomorrow and will chair the conference.
Siboni said that aerial threats are defined as anything that can hit the populated areas or strategic assets in Israel “In the past , this was the only aircraft that posed the threats . Now it’s mainly rockets and missiles”
Siboni added that prevention of the threat is the preferred defense but that is a complicated task and therefore the approach should be a combination.
“An attack on the launch sources can involve heavy losses on the attacking side and that is always a consideration when the option is considered ” Siboni added
Another aspect that will get a special focus in the conference , is the question of defending infrastructure assets in Israel “This can be based on a narrow definition or a wider one that will include what we refer to as related assets . This will require a very critical decision as the availability of the interceptors will always be limited compared with the volume and variety of the enemy’s arsenal”.
