Smart City: Combination Of Technology And Human Intelligence

The term Smart City refers to cities that integrate technological means which collect data from their surroundings, send it to a single center which gathers all the data collected, where a data analysis process is being done autonomously. The Internet of Things trend plays a substantial role in turning cities around the world more technological and smarter, but total automation is not necessarily the best way to achieve the most efficiency and president of the Indian company Efftronics Systems, Dasari Ramakrishna, currently working on microchip-based smart solutions, says that only a combination between artificial intelligence and human intelligence can achieve maximum efficiency. That way the cities and the people heading them can resolve problems in an active fashion before they actually occur and not just deal with the difficulties they cause afterwards.

Ramakrishna’s opinion is not at all divorced from reality. Technology, as advanced as it may be, does not have the human sensitivity and the attention for small nuances when it turns to face a problem. Should it run into an obstacle or challegnce, it might operate mechanically to bring about a quick solution without taking into account minor changes it may cause. Humans, on the other hand, could stop for a minute and think of which solution of the arsenal at hand could be the best one to solve a problem. Should a need arise, a human could also perform some sort of adaptation, if needed, to adjust the apprporiate respone to a certain challenge.

As always, the best way is taking the best of all worlds and not relying on just one specific path. Each and every thing has its weak points and so, in order to maximize performance, a synergy must be created to achieve the best possible results. A human being might not be able to think as fast or as clear in order to perform complicated tasks the way a high-tec technological machine can, but then again, machine couldn’t possibly understand the small nuances required or think critically as a human being could.
