The “wild south” in Sinai and the Israeli option

11961382_sThis is a crazy and unacceptable situation. Rockets are launched from the Egyptian Sinai desert into Israel and the Israeli leadership is “holding consultations”. This situation only encourages the terror groups in the Sinai can continue their attacks.

The Egyptians are doing nothing and Israel maneuvered itself to a helpless position. The cold peace with Egypt has paralyzed a country like Israel with a mighty military force.

If the Egyptians really want to hit hard the terrorist cells in Sinai, they need to perform a series of operations that they are probably unprepared to carry out. These would involve large-scale arrests, the assassination of terrorist activists, the creation of an intelligence network in Sinai, a campaign to stop the smuggling via tunnels into Gaza and Sinai.

President Mohammed Morsi and the Supreme Military Council have no motivation and ability to carry out such measures.

In this situation Israel will have to act. The Sinai is the new “Wild South” of the region with many potential risks to Israel

Leaving the situation in the hands of the Egyptian leadership is no less than suicide.

But to do something Israel needs leaders that are ready to take some risks and no shiver from every American or European criticism

This will have to happen soon because the current situation will only encourage the terrorists to continue their attacks.

Israel cannot afford such a war of attrition. It happened in the Gaza area for much too long. It should not happen in the Eilat area , in the range of the rockets operated from this no man’s land.
