The UK Ministry of Defense has been upgrading its surveillance systems. Excelitas Technologies company Qioptiq has received a $100m surveillance and target acquisition contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). Under the contract, the company will provide support for the UK Armed Forces’ surveillance and targeting equipment (STA) from its St Asaph site in Wales over the next six years. The company will also ensure vital night vision equipment is available to the British troops deployed worldwide.

According to the company’s website, it offers a range of surveillance equipment utilizing both visible image intensifying and uncooled thermal imaging technology. Monocular and Binocular eyepiece variants are available providing maximum flexibility for surveillance applications. Its night vision and thermal weapon aiming and target acquisition sights are suitable for a wide variety of platforms, including individual assault weapons, light support weapons, crew-served weapons, anti-tank/anti-materiel weapons and specialized sniper applications.

The company’s executive vice-president, Doug Benner, told army-technology.com: “We appreciate the confidence the UK MoD has placed in us. This selection will allow us to continue the mission of ensuring STA equipment is available to the end user when needed. Whether serving defense ministries around the world or meeting the critical requirements of the world’s largest defense prime contractors, Excelitas’ Defense and Aerospace mission is ‘keeping our troops safe’ with the best technology, products, and services.”

The contract covers equipment used across the UK Armed Forces delivering capability to all three front line commands, the company stated. The deal adjoined to options for some additional five years of support which would increase the contract value by a further $84m.
