The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has asked for an early delivery of its Lockheed Martin F-35 test aircraft to expedite the process of adapting Israeli weapon systems to the aircraft.

The F-35 (Adir) contract for Israel includes one test aircraft that will be operated by the IAF’s flight test center.

According to the IAF, the special test aircraft will have an operational capability, but its main mission will be to enable the development of Israeli systems that will enhance the F-35 capabilities in the IAF. These are mainly weapon systems.

Immediately after the first F-35 contract was signed with the US, the Israeli ministry of defense with the IAF have approved the development of special versions of Israeli weapon systems for the aircraft.

For example, Rafael is working on adapting its Python-5 and Derby air-air missiles to the aircraft . The company’s Litening 5 targeting pod is also in the adaptation process.

Israel has so far signed contracts for the purchase of 50 F-35’s.

The US had refused to let Israel equip the F-35 with some main systems that are connected to the main software block that controls the stealth aircraft systems. But after negotiations, the Americans agreed to allow the IAF to add some systems such as a communication unit and some add-on to the integral EW system of the aircraft.

The pressure on the US also resulted in an agreement to perform all the maintenance of the F-35 in the IAF’s maintenance unit. The Americans demanded that for major maintenance the F-35 will be transferred to technical units in Europe. The IAF objected firmly, and its position was accepted.
