China’s next generation of combat robots is now for sale. At the recent DSA 2016 Kuala Lumpur arms shows, manufacturers from around the world came together to showcase their newest tech to Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Chinese firms were present at the event, despite the increased tensions regarding territorial claims in the South China Sea. They were pitching everything from anti-ship missiles and fighter jets to frigates and advanced radar systems. The most exciting of their offerings, however, were the newest unmanned combat systems. Most of these are still undergoing testing with the Chinese military, while a select few have just entered service.

The High Speed Intercept Boat (HSIB) from Poly Technologies, of the China Poly Group Corporation, pitched its unmanned surface vessels (USV) high-speed trimaran to Southeast Asian navies and coast guards. HSIB is 13 metres long, 4 across, and with its twin 850 HP engines can reach a top speed of 80 knots with a range of 200 nautical miles (370 km). HSIB can autonomously chase targets and is equipped with advanced optical equipment and high bandwidth datalinks.

It can be armed with either two 7.62 mm light machine guns or one heavy 12.7 mm machine gun turret. Alternatively, the HSIB can carry one (small) guided missile.

An HSIB prototype is currently undergoing testing, said programme manager Zhu Yingzi, and is performing patrols and other missions. We can only speculate how the Chinese are planning to use these machines when the technology advances, but for now they are happy to win over friends by sharing their developments.
