Israel is preparing to defend against drones aiding in terror attacks

The Israeli security forces are estimating and warning against terrorists using mini-UAVs, and specifically small drones to commit terror attacks. This subject will be one of the main issues in the unmanned systems and robotics, AUS&R 2015, which will take place next month in Rishon Letzion.

The ease with which one can purchase a drone nowadays, for just several hundred dollars, and mount it with explosives – not just in Israel but in every country fearing terror attacks and violence – makes coping with this matter a challenge both strategically and technologically. The United States, for example, is dealing with drones landing on the White House lawn, as well as passing near passenger planes landing in central international airports – events who might not have been intended as an attack or assault, but reveal systemic flaws in the detection system and lines of defense that must be considered.

The new threat posed by UAVs on the HomeLand Security system will be one of the main topics in the international conference on September 7th in Rishon Letzion.

Not all the field’s developments can be revealed but it is already known that the conference and exhibition will display innovative sensors developed to detect and recognize small UAVs even in the most difficult of areas. “These are small vehicles, usually very quiet, which are very hard to detect even with existing sensors”, an expert in the field said yesterday.

Visitors from all over the world who registered to participate in the conference have shown a lot of interest in the Israeli developments, as Israel is well-known to be a UAV leader, with a lot of experience in operating them in various conditions. “This experience in operating UAVs”, added the expert, “gives a great advantage to anyone who develops systems to detect small UAVs”.

While the IDF, and mostly its air force, have ways of stopping large and medium-sized UAVs from entering into Israel’s aerial territory, when it comes to small drones, stopping them isn’t that simple.

The conference will display systems that are being developed right now for this exact need. Several major foreign companies, whose representors will arrive at the conference, have shown interest in such developments.
