Elbit Systems announced its US subsidiary, Elbit Systems of America, was directly awarded a Brazilian contract to refurbish 4 Grumman C-1A planes. The entire primary contract was awarded to Mesa, Arizona-based Marsh Aviation. The subcontract, estimated at $106 million, will be carried out by Elbit Systems of America over a period of 5 years.

The refurbishment project will take place at San Antonio, Texas, at Elbit Systems of America’s M7 Aerospace plant, under the close supervision of Brazilian naval officers stationed locally.

Once the refurbishment project is completed, the Grumman C-1As will be converted into Carrier-On-Board/Air-to-Air Refueling KC-2 COD/AAR model, designed for operation aboard one of Brazil’s aircraft carriers.

“We are delighted to refurbish the Brazilian Navy’s aircraft,” says Elbit Systems of America President and CEO Raanan Horowitz. “We have built our reputation on the successful company record of living up to our commitments. Successful completion of this refurbishment and modernization project will bolster the Brazilian Navy’s capabilities.”

The Grumman C-1A refurbishment project comprises rendering the platforms operational, total engine makeover, installation of new avionics systems (including new cockpit) and integrating them, along with communications and environment control systems – as well an air-to-air refueling feature.
