The U.S. Army has contracted Datron, a manufacturer of unmanned platforms, to provide a small unmanned aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing, aimed at battlefield intelligence gathering missions.

The UAVs manufactured by the San-Diego, California-based company are small, compact tactical drones, ruggedized for battlefield use and aimed at surveillance, photographing targets and transmitting images to command centers. The vehicle’s unique advantage is its VTOL capabilities, allowing it to hover for long periods of time above targets, record images and transmit materials using GPS equipment.
