Brazil Invests in World Cup Security

Brazil has ordered the Saab RBS 70 very short-range air defense system and plans to deploy it in time for the World Cup soccer competition due to kick off this summer. The missiles are part of a security systems aimed at protecting the games from terror acts.
The Swedish company said March 3 it had signed a $12 million deal to supply an undisclosed number of launchers and associated equipment to the Brazilian Army.
Brazil is hosting the World Cup this year and the Summer Olympics in 2016, and Saab’s missile will provide protection at both these events as well as provide defense for strategic infrastructure.

According to Defense News the deal brings to 19 the number of countries who have purchased more than 17,000 RBS 70 man-portable missiles.
Saab’s biggest success in Brazil to date was the recent selection of the Swedish company’s Gripen fighter to modernize the Brazilian Air Force’s combat jet fleet. Negotiations for that deal are ongoing.
