Fast Draw – And Another Warning is Ignored

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Turkey this weekend, with tremors recorded as far as Israel. No casualties or property damage were reported. It’s another reminder, but those in charge felt nothing. Plans to protect residential and public buildings are stuck in the bureaucratic process for years, officials can’t even implement plans already approved. Someone must be waiting for a miracle.

Israel is not ready for an earthquake.

True, you can’t actually stop the earth from shaking, but you can prepare and minimize casualties. In Israel it’s all done offhandedly, for show. Some impressive search and rescue drills are conducted, ministers get their photos taken in impressive poses, but that’s about it. We’ll all be paying the price.

IHLS – Israel Homeland Security

There’s no one Israeli organization that’s in charge, really in charge, of large-scale search and rescue operations. Every relevant organization acts as if it’s the only one around. There are some good, skilled people, but there is no coordination at all. That’s the real problem.

Instead of conducting ridiculous drills every few months the Prime Minister should have gotten involved personally. He should have determined which organization will coordinate all search and rescue operations during national disasters, whether a natural in origin or a military strike against the civilian home front.

This last warning we received over the weekend from Turkey failed to make a dent in the shield of stupidity surrounding the relevant organizations and decision makers.

I really don’t want to be the one saying “I told you so,” it will be far too late.
