ANKA UAV, TAIHas Israeli technology helped Turkey
to develop its unmanned air systems (UAS)
industry?
This question is on the table
again as Turkey is about to start exporting its home made UAS. A
few years ago when the ties between Israel and Turkey were at their
peak Israeli made UAS were sold to Turkey. The Israeli Aerospace
Industries (IAI) Heron is still operated by its airforce.
Turkish Aerospace Industries plans to sell its Anka (Phoenix) UAS
to Egypt. “For Anka, we will develop the mission computer and
software with Egypt. Also, Egypt will produce parts for its Ankas,”
TAI general manager Muharrem Dortkasli said during the
International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul. “Anka has
got a deep interest from the Middle East. We believe more orders
will come soon,” he added. A medium-altitude, long-endurance design
equipped with an electro-optical/infrared sensor supplied by
Aselsan, the Anka secured certification from Turkey’s
undersecretary of defence industries during the show. TAI is also
developing a turboprop-engine version of the Anka. This more
powerful version will be capable of carrying a heavier payload.
