Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) work great in the air – it’s in the name, after all. Most of them manage to land on land just fine, too. But water? That’s a bit more tricky, or at least it was until now. DroneRafts has developed a multi-terrain landing system for UAVs that allows operators to land their drones on land or water.

WaterStrider is designed to fit the DJI Phantom 2 and Phantom 3 (all variants) and can easily interface with the standard landing gear. With WaterStrider on board, the Phantom can take off and land pretty much anywhere.

“WaterStrider offers existing drone users the ability to dramatically expand their capabilities for completely new uses. We think hobbyists and professionals alike will be able to enjoy and use their drones more in places like pools, lakes, beaches, and even ski slopes,” said DroneRafts co-founder David Moser.

David Moser, along with co-founders Zacheriah Cole and Adam Morrison, realised in 2015 that what was missing from the world of drones is the ability to land on water. They’ve set out to design a solution that could fill the gap.

With the design finished, and test flying complete, the team is gearing up for production. To procure the robust tooling and equipment needed, DroneRafts has set up a kickstarter campaign.

“Kickstarter is a natural incubator for drone-related startups and being drone enthusiasts and entrepreneurs ourselves, we are huge supporters for breaking through on Kickstarter. A Kickstarter campaign debut was a perfect fit when considering how to launch the WaterStriderTM,” said Cole.
