Anonymous To Take On Banks

Hacktivist collective Anonymous have found a new target to wage cyber-war on: economic institutions. Anonymous have released a message warning of a series of attacks against the Bank of England, the New York Stock Exchange, and other central banks.

The video, titled Shut Down the Banks, declared the English and American institutions as its chief targets, but promises a series of attacks over the next month.

Anonymous accuses the financial elites heading these institutions of helping powerful organisations and governments to maintain their secrecy and of upholding their power.

“They feel comfortable in their ivory towers built on the broken backs of labourers of the world,” says a voice in the video. “It is time to show the world the true power and the true face of the faceless,” he warns.

“The powers that be have flown too close to the sun and the time has come to set the wings of their empire ablaze and watch the system their power relies on come to a grinding halt and come crashing down around them. This time our target is the New York Stock Exchange and Bank of England. This is a call to arms, brothers”

Anonymous has already targeted the central bank of Greece in an attack that damaged its website.

Fittingly, the group says in the video: “Olympus will fall. A few days ago we declared the revival of operation Icarus. Today we have continuously taken down the website of the Bank of Greece. This marks the start of a 30-day campaign against central bank sites across the world.”

A spokesman for the Bank of Greece, however, downplayed the attack, saying: “ The attack lasted for a few minutes and was successfully tackled by the bank’s security systems. The only thing that was affected by the denial-of-service attack was our web site.”
