Amazon Web Services (AWS) has finally moved its cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) platform away from beta and into the release stage.

AWS IoT enables organisation to remotely manage their IoT implementations. Prices start at $5 per million messages. The Free Tier allows for 250,000 messages per month for one year.

During the beta phase, Jeff Barr – Chief Evangelist for Amazon Web Services – announced that Amazon added an AWS Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK) for iOS – with Android support soon to come – as well as IPv6 support to the AWS IoT Device Gateway. Now it’s ready to be fully rolled out.

Support for IoT through its AWS platform is the next logical step for Amazon, who have lead the charge in e-commerce, devices, and cloud innovations.

“Like some of our more advanced customers, we have been building systems around connected devices for quite some time,” Barr wrote in a company blog post. “Our experience with Amazon Robotics, drones (Amazon Prime Air), the Amazon Echo, the Dash Button, and multiple generations of Kindles has given us a well-informed perspective on how to serve this really important emerging market,” says Barr.

Amazon has had an advantage in the field by being an early proponent of cloud services.

“Behind the scenes, AWS services such as AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), and Amazon Redshift provide the responsive, highly scalable infrastructure needed to build a robust IoT application,” wrote Barr.

Two companies are already taking advantage of the offering. Philips HealthSuite is collecting, storing, and analysing 15 petabytes of patient health data through the platform. Scout Alarm, who make self-contained wireless home security systems, is using AWS IoT as a backend for its devices.
