Your Smoke Detector Will Also Be Wired

Surely you’ve all gone off for a few days’ vacation in some remote location and failed to leave your worries behind. Some of us, before we even leave our doorstep, fear that just when we’re not at home, something is bound to go wrong. Nest, one of the most well-known companies for the Internet of Things (IoT), has come up with a new home device to be connected to the internet, allowing us to have remote control using our smartphones.

The Nest Protect is a “smart” smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. It’s designed to sit unobtrusively on a wall or ceiling and constantly monitor your house for any sign of alarm. What makes it different from your garden variety smoke detector is its interactivity and the ability to be informed via the smartphone app. Even if you’re on the other side of the globe.

The glowing circular ring of light indicates the status – whether everything is alright or not. It also has a very loud alarm that can reach 85 decibels so that it can’t be confused with any other sound. Furthermore, before the alarm even needs to go off, the Protect has a “Heads Up” feature which gives you an early warning that smoke or carbon monoxide levels are rising (and before it is an emergency). When it senses smoke or CO and they’re still below emergency levels, the Protect pulses yellow and tells you what’s happening in a human voice. It then sends its operator a warning on their smartphone or tablet, thus allowing for immediate contact with authorities. The device is very easy to operate and uses the home WiFi network in order to communicate with the smartphone. But even should the home network go down, it can still send warning the moment smoke or CO levels rise.

This is how Nest has turned a boring device such as a smoke detector into an original gadget and a great gift for those who are anxious during vacations, to now be able to have control of their homes from afar, sit back and relax.
