The Israeli air force (IAF) is in the process of enabling its large unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) to perform in full autonomous mode in the air and on the ground.

The IAF is in the process of incorporating automatic takeoff and landing in its Israel aerospace industries (IAI) Heron-1 and the Elbit systems Hermes-900 unmanned air systems(UAS).

In addition to the  Automatic takeoff and landing capability (ATOL) which is now being introduced into the IAF’s  Heron- 1 (Shoval) and Elbit Systems’ Hermes-900 (Cochav) the two will be capable of full automatic operations on the ground.

This capability will enable taxing from the hangar to the air strip and takeoff. After mission completion , the large UAV’s will land and taxi back to their hangars with engine shutoffs.

Israeli IAF sources say that the ATOL and ground movement capabilities are “force multipliers” because they allow a bigger utilization of  the large UAVs.
