Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intends to create an automated information sharing platform where all “cyber threat indicators” would be collected and disseminated to public and private sectors in the U.S. in near real-time. This new platform will collect all of the information regarding cyber threats and after processing circle it to different consumer, revealed Alejandro Mayorkas. deputy secretary of DHS, during the Black Hat conference for information security which was held in Las Vegas.

Creating this new platform should be challenging, since the information security agencies are not in a very good relationship with different governmental authorities, as they are deemed unable to guard and secure the information that reaches them. Mayorkas said that the best way to bring about this cooperation between the different sides, thus creating this important platform for HomeLand security, is by building mutual trust. It might be an “incremental process, but it has to start somewhere.”

Mayorkas emphsizes the importance of having the different parties cooperating in order to create a more professional evnironment that could cope with different cyber threats in the best way. At a time when hackers and virtual terrorists commit many attacks, revealing better capabilities from one attack to the next, cyber defense agencies must share the information with one another, even if it was collected individually. Referring to information sources as if they were private property or secrets of the trade, is what will harm defense efforts the most. Both them and the government have to look at the bigger picture beyond the narrow battle of interests and share the information they possess for the common goal of protecting the homeland.
