Cyber Contest In South Korea

Cyber threats on countries around the world are a main issue to be dealt with on a daily basis. Every so often we report successful attacks, failed attempts, personal information stolen from governmental and industrial computer systems and more. Only two weeks ago hackers identified with the Islamic State have published information about several hundred American government employees, and several months prior to that information was stolen about four million past and present employees working for the United States’ government.

South Korea is also threatened and is forced to deal with recurring cyber attacks by malicious hackers. In dealing with this cyber challenge, Seoul has come up with an idea to hold a competition in which contenders will have to prevent virtual attacks from taking place. Whoever succeeds will win first place will receive a financial award equal to $61,000 along with many other prizes.

The contest was initiated by the cyber command of the South Korean military and the national intelligence service also took part in organizing the different tasks in order to find the best people for this nationally critical mission. “The military is making multilateral efforts to safeguard cyberspace at a time when the technology and methods of cyber-attacks by unidentified attackers are fast-evolving,” the ministry said. A contest is a great way to create a work environment to produce impressive achievements, as each contestant strives to win the others, making them work harder to come up with better ideas compared to the others.

South Korea is considered to be one of the top technologically advanced countries today and this contest could make it even more so.
