Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are operational systems found mostly in the use of armies around the world. However, due to UAV units becoming much cheaper as well as the fact that in the past there have been cases where aerial platforms crash landed in enemy territory intact, the near future present a threat of terror organizations activating UAVs for their own purposes. The need to cope with UAV threats have grown in the last decade or so: It is estimated that in 1999, 20 different kinds of UAVs were available and 800 units were used, whereas in 2012, more than 200 different kinds were available and 10,000 units were in use.ausr_e3

One of the most disturbing scenarios for the world’s military forces, and the United States’ in particular, is one where hostile forces will make use of UAVs to attack.

In fear of this scenario, the United States military has decided to develop anti-UAV system which will also be able to cope with missiles, artillery and mortar bombs. This interception system will be based on machine guns, unlike other missile defense systems being used in most cases for coping with aerial threats.

The machine gun which will be used is 50 mm in diameter and will include a precision tracking radar as sensor, a computer to manage fire and a system which sends and receives radio frequencies. The system locates the threat and the conputer recognizes the deviation from the target in order to maximize the accuracy of the hit.
