MicroWaves to Disperse Demonstrations

MicroWaves to Disperse Demonstrations

People’s Republic of China has announced that it has managed to develop a new non-lethal weapon based on microwave technology as means to disperse demonstrations. The new weapon causes a feeling of a terrible burn and it’s capabilities are also effective against pirates and in activity against terrorists. The system, called MMW WB-1, fires non-lethal microwaves that cause water molecules to reach a high temperature. The effective range is 80 meters but after different improvements it can reach 1 km. A Chinese expert on ship arming claims that this is a most effective weapon, as it can be used for a variety of situations.

Non-lethal systems are not unique to China, and many armies and law enforcement agencies around the world use these means to disperse demonstration. Israel makes use of many different methods to disperse demonstrations and activists, among them the Skunk, which operates on the protesters’ sense of smell and prevents them from acting out without any control in the future.

Some might say these are in-humane methods despite the fact that they are, after all, non-lethal. But there’s no doubt that when temporary discomfort (even if for several days rather than several seconds) is put on the balance as oppsed to getting killed from live ammunition, the discomfort is preferable – no matter how unpleasant as it may be.
