LAHATBrazilian delegates showing great interest in a Israeli laser system for helicopters

Israel Aaerospace Industries (IAI) is currently conducting demonstrations of its Nimrod SR laser homing missile. The demonstrations are for Brazilian Airforce delegates, examining the possibility of equipping some of their helicopters with the manufacturer’s systems.

The Nimrod SR is a new version of the company’s LAHAT missile, designed for use with aerial and ground launchers as well as from tank guns. This long range air-to-surface and surface-to-surface missile has a laser guidance system. It can go as far as 10 k”m when launched from a helicopter.

According to IAI spokespeople the Nimrod can be supplied with a variety of mission-customized warheads and the lightweight missiles and launcher, because of their light weight, do not delay the helicopter nor adversely affect the helicopter’s effective mission time.

The Nimrod SR can be adapted to almost all helicopter types, even the lightest. Its system includes a multi component used for observation purposes and having designation capabilities, the IAI’s MOSP3000D; the system also includes a Weapons Control System (WCS) as well as two missile launchers each able to launch 4 missiles.

According to the IAI, the missile have been exported “in significant numbers” to various customers. Flight  journal reported that the Polish Airforce is also evaluating the possibility of acquiring Israeli Aerial Industry laser guided missiles, this in order to equip their new helicopters.
