First responders in New York will need all their expertise and equipment to try and cope with the effects of the western storm that is about to hit the city today.

Estimated Snowfall NYJan2015Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday that the storm that is about to hit the city today is likely to be one of the biggest to ever strike New York City. 2,000 snow plows would be available, along with 242 from other agencies.

According to the New York Times, nearly 500 Department of Transportation workers began treating bridges and overpasses, and emergency crews filled more than 1,000 potholes. And the city’s Office of Emergency Management was coordinating with dozens of local, state and federal agencies.

The agency would be ready to open temporary shelters and had arranged for the use of “high-axle” vehicles owned by the National Guard that could be used to assist emergency medical technicians navigating snow drifts.

After the 9/11 terror attack the New York first responders were re equipped and the new systems are expected the help them to cope with a long list of emergencies. The dangers are from electric cables that will be cut, floods and the effects of the wind especially on tall structures.

“The new equipment of the city’s first responders will be put to full scale test,” experts said this morning.” Their dedication has been proved many times in the past but now their toll will have to be tested in extreme conditions.”
