U.S. law enforcement authorities must be on the lookout for potential copycat attacks following this week’s shooting massacre at a satirical magazine in Paris, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said an exclusive interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Johnson said the attack in France – which left 12 people dead, including two police officers – highlights how the world has entered a new phase in which terrorists are using propaganda to inspire violence in other countries. The government is responding, Johnson said, by tracking would-be terrorists on the Internet and those who are leaving their native countries to do battle in Syria and elsewhere.

Johnson said he instructed authorities in November to begin seeking more information about people who are traveling here from countries that are exempt from U.S. visa requirements.

Further, Johnson said he is traveling to Islamic cultural centers and other community organizations across the nation, encouraging them to build trust with local police and steer young men away from violence.

False alarms about terror threats can disrupt life in big citiesMeanwhile, soldiers in France, the UK and the US were reportedly told to avoid wearing uniforms as much as possible. The Daily Mail reported that British soldiers have been warned not to wear their uniform outside barracks amid fears of a copycat attacks. They have also been told not to let strangers know that they are serving in the British Army.

Whitehall officials are understood to have noticed increased ‘chatter’ among jihadists wanting to carry out a beheading or other high-profile attack on a serving soldier. Fanatics have been carrying out internet searches for the location of army barracks across the country to identify targets, the Mail has learnt.

According to news.com.au, security experts have warned Australian authorities that the local illegal gun market should be watched closely. Unchecked, the situation may make it more difficult to avoid a Paris-style attack in Australia.

Israeli security experts told iHLS that increased activity by law enforcement and intelligence agencies at the scene of possible terror activities may become a “big annoyance”. The reason: they require the mobilization of large number of security and emergency services. Nevertheless, this is the only way to fight terror.
