Command & Control of Unmanned Platforms Based on Rugged Systems

Israel local development and production of rugged computerized systems based on off-the-shelf commercial components is intensively integrated in the mission systems and utilized by the operational Forces. These systems are designed to function in highly demanding and extreme conditions operations in the framework of, inter alia, command and control (C4ISR) of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and other types of robots.

One of the most interesting application in this field, which will be showcased in the upcoming AUS&R Expo between November 25 and 26, is a command, control and display unit enabling remote operation of unmanned vehicles and sensor systems, receive feedback and control or operate various dedicated payloads.

UAVs often operate in highly demanding environments, whether military (UAVs, armored combat vehicles, robots, etc.) or civilian (drilling, tunneling and quarrying equipment). Therefore, their respective command and control units must also be able to withstand adverse environment conditions, including extreme high and low temperatures, humidity, dust, vibrations, shocks and scratches. They must also feature high visibility under any lighting conditions, feature resistance to radio disturbances (both natural and intentional) and have additional settings.

Milper’s UAV Command and control application is carried out using a rugged computerized platform by Panasonic, in both Thoughbook and Toughpad tablet configurations. Milper tailors them per Unmanned platform manufacturers’ specifications, adds external controls or joysticks – in accordance with the client’s specific ergonometric requirements.

Command and control units are generic, based on rugged tablets or laptops. These systems support any dedicated command and control software by UAV or unmanned platform manufacturers.

The rugged command and control units come in a variety of configurations and dimensions, from 5″ to 10″. They consist of a generic Windows or Android operating system, and can be installed on a tripod, within a battle vest as a wearable system, handheld or installed in any ground, naval or aerial vehicle, as well as in command and control stations. The system supports interfaces through standard protocols and devices, including RS232/422 Wi-Fi, BT, LAN, USB and others.
