- Iceland issued a red alert to civil aviation following signs of eruption at Vattnejökull. The airspace around the volcano was sealed off, but Iceland’s airports remain open for air travel.
- Sierra Leone’s parliament passed a law prohibiting any form of hiding Ebola patients, making it an offence punishable by up to two years in prison. The Ivory the coast sealed off its borders in order to prevent the Ebola outbreak from spreading to the country. Thus far, the Ebola epidemic has claimed the lives of 1,427 people.
- US freighter Cape Ray completed the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons on board, some 600 tons of nerve gas and 20 tons of mustard gas. The chemicals were destroyed when the vessel anchored in international waters in the middle of the Mediterranean, using a special method of dissolving the poisonous materials in water and additional substances.

- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 has shaken northern California. It struck at 10:20 GMT 6km north-west of American Canyon, at a depth of 6.7 miles, 51 miles from Sacramento and about 30 miles north-east of San Francisco. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.
- The killing of a US journalist by an Islamic State militant believed to be from the UK is “an utter betrayal of everything the British people stand for,” the foreign secretary has said. Philip Hammond said the government was investing “significant resources” to tackle “a barbaric ideology”. He said the threat from conflicts in Syria and Iraq could last a generation
- Forces from the Libyan city of Misrata have seized Tripoli’s main airport after more than a month of fighting with a rival group. Pictures on social media purportedly showed Misrata fighters celebrating at the terminal building and standing on civilian planes in what, if confirmed, would be a big development in the battle to control the capital
