Fast Draw – Police Incompetence

It’s massively inexcusable. The incident should have shaken the police to its core. They blamed it all on a fall guy, instead. Just another day in Israel. Sure, in this case the fall guy is a relatively senior officer, but he’s still just a fall guy.

In Japan someone would have committed seppuku, in other countries officers would have handed in their resignation. In Israel it ended with a quick investigation and fingers pointed at a few officers.

I’m afraid nothing is going to change. There will be a few changes but in a few months there will be a similar incident. Something is wrong with the way Israel’s police is organized. The police officers’ sense of responsibility is lacking, something is missing in their training.

This can’t be solved by transferring officers to other duties or preventing their promotion. The solution is proper eduction, training and appointing experienced personnel to the right positions.

A novice pilot can’t be allowed to fly a passenger jet over the ocean. The fact that someone so green, so detached, was put in charge of taking every emergency phone call made in Israel is simply illogical.

The public has to be able to rely on the officers answering the 100 emergency calls. It has to be this way even if it requires extensive police reforms. Right now it really doesn’t look like it.

The Public Security Minister should have taken some drastic steps following the recent incident, but for now he remains silent or simply mumbles a few words. He’s not doing what he should be doing. This isn’t a normal case of police misbehavior, it’s a collapse of the public’s trust in the police.
