Bad news for drone lovers in the United States: The National Park Service banned the use of drones (or any other flying device) within the limits of all 401 American national parks. According to GeekWire the ban also covers the use of these devices in national monuments.

Many park visitors love to fly drones in the expansive U.S. national parks, capturing unique photographs. Ban supporters, however, claim that people escape their daily lives and visit national parks to avoid exactly this sort of phenomena.

The National Park Service director added that he’s very concerned about the negative impact of drones on park environment, and the ban will remain until full federal regulations go into effect. The goal, according to him, is to provide visitors with the best possible experience.

The move follows an incident involving park rangers asking visitors to avoid flying drones in the Yosemite National Park. The current ban is temporary, but the formation of new regulation might take as long as 18 months. Violating the new rule carries a 5,000-dollar fine and up to six months in prison.
